We had an issue with our iPhones showing notification of email but not being able to see the content/body of the message. The header and all our details apart from the content. Just the download message button!!

After a lot of searching the wonderfully easy fix was from the Exchange Management console to go to the accepted domains and change the default domain to any other domain and change it back again!!

It was as easy as that and email was viewable again.

Server 2008 R2 RDS

I am currently setting up a Windows Server 2008 R2 Terminal Server or Remote Desktop Services as it is now called. And came across a couple of issue that it took a while to find solutions for.

We are running Office 2003 of the server and it is fully patched but the odd thing when using Word as the email editor is that when you click reply or forward for the first time after opening Outlook the window spawns behind Outlook. This confused my test users no end and through all my searching no one seems to have found a fix. It is directly associated with RDS as one guy who tested to the extreme found as soon as the RDS role was removed the normal function was restored. For now anyway GP is forcing Outlook itself to be the editor which is working ok at the moment.

The other niggle, again, with Outlook is random crashes while opening the program, not every time but frequently enough that users will complain all the time! This one was simply resolved by adding Outlook.exe to the DEP exemption list. No crashes since but we’ll see.

Exchange 2010 Management Console Initialization Failed

I logged onto a long running Exchange 2010 server today to create a transport rule but was confronted with the following in the EMC;

The following error occurred when searching for On-Premises Exchange Server:
[servername.domain.local] Connecting to remote server failed with the following error message:
Access is denied. For more information, see the about_Remote_Troubleshooting Help topic. It was running the command ‘Discover-ExchangeServer -UseWIA $true -SurpressError $true’.

I then started the obvious search as to what might have caused this and didn’t find much that helped but on the advice of one blogger to bit the bullet and reboot the server thought that’s easy enough to schedule. So rebooted the server this evening and all is well, remember that the reboot can be king!!

Editing distribution groups in Exchange 2010

It took me a while testing the various possible ways of editing distribution groups in Exchange 2010 but by far the easiest way is to use the Exchange Control Panel (or ECP).

This is one of the web apps available in Exchange 2010 and looks very similar to Outlook Web Access. Once logged in to https://yourserver/ECP there is a groups tab on the left hand side. This page shows you the groups you are a member of, allows you to join groups (or at least send a request to join) and manage groups that you have ownership rights to.
